Gerrards Cross Carbon Neutral Transformation
Location
Gerrards Cross
Date

Project type
Extension & Refurbishment
Unchanged since the late 1970s, this long-term family residence in Gerrards Cross, Buckighamshire suffered from a constrained layout, poor thermal efficiency, and an underutilised plot. The architectural brief demanded a whole-house transformation—expanding living space and introducing high-end amenities while drastically lowering ongoing operational energy costs.
To preserve the garden’s existing swimming pool, a shallow rear extension was engineered to reconfigure the ground floor flow. This addition connects the main house directly to the pool house, transforming the previously isolated space into a dedicated wellness wing complete with a steam room, sauna, and additional bathroom. On the upper floor, side extensions accommodate bespoke dressing rooms and luxury en-suite bathrooms for the primary suites.
Simultaneously, the property underwent a deep energy retrofit. The exterior envelope was wrapped in high-performance insulation, re-clad in textured brickwork, and fitted with triple-glazed windows. A new roof integrates discrete solar slates paired with a garage battery storage system, generating over 50% of the home's electricity needs. Powered by an air source heat pump and smart energy tariffs, the property operates with net-zero carbon emissions, reducing running costs by up to 80%.
