Straw House
Date
2025
Location
Hertfordshire
Project type
New Build
Currently in early development, this Paragraph 84 concept design is situated within the Chiltern Hills National Landscape (AONB) in Hertfordshire. Conceived as an exceptional, isolated country residence, the project meets the rigorous statutory standards for outstanding architectural quality in sensitive rural settings.
The house achieves carbon negativity in construction and operational net-zero status through natural, high-performance building methods. Its external envelope features 60cm-thick walls composed of a structural timber frame packed with dense straw insulation and wrapped in breathable lime render. This traditional yet innovative system provides extreme thermal mass, structural breathability, and an organic tactile aesthetic contextually rooted in the landscape.
Designed primarily across a single ground-floor level, the spatial plan offers long-term adaptability for our clients, creating a flexible "forever home" that blends ecological responsibility with high-end architectural elegance.
