Markland Ball homes was born out of the growing demand for beautiful unique homes, be they new build, extensions or refurbishments.
Richard Markland set up his design studio in 2010 to pursue his passion for architecture. He brings to the practice thirty years’ experience in the construction industry.
After completing a sensitive extension to a Grade II* listed country manor and an expansive new build property on the edge of Richmond Park, Alex Ball was shortlisted for 2020 Rising Star of the Year award by RIBAJ.
Together they have created Markland Ball / Homes to bring a sharper focus to their home design service. Alex leads a talented team able to deliver projects big and small from conception to completion.

Our services include architectural, interior and landscape design, we also offer project management and visualisation services. Each project is different and every client has their own specific needs, therefore we always tailor our services to suit accordingly. However we have found that our services tend to fall in to 4 distinct levels;

Understand
Creating your dream home may be one of the most personal journeys you can undertake. Additionally technical drawings can be difficult to understand and often don't convey what the final spaces will feel like. For this reason we developed a way of working called 'Engage, Experience & Understand' to help clients feel confident and in control throughout the process.
Using technologies such as virtual reality (VR), walk around virtual 3D models and CGIs throughout the design process, we are able to show you exactly what your home will look and feel like, long before it is ever built.

Sustainability
Buildings and construction account for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whilst also having a significant impact on our natural habitats.
We are committed to producing high quality architecture that contributes positively to the natural environment. We look at reducing the carbon footprint during construction and the long-term impact the building has over its life cycle.
We urge all our clients to consider improving the energy efficieny of their homes. Not only is this better for the environment but it also reduces the overall running cost of those homes.

The Process
Stage 1
Getting to know you
Designing something as personal as a home requires trust and understanding. Therefore at the start of each project we work closely with you to develop a brief for the project, establishing your needs, design aspirations and budget.
Stage 2
Concept Design
Building on these initial discussions we create a series of sketch ideas focusing on space planning and overall form. These are presented alongside a set of precedent images tailored specifically to you and your project. After discussing these proposals you select one or two to be taken forward for further development.
Stage 3
Developed Design
During this stage we appoint the full design team, which could include quantity surveyors, structural, mechanical and electrical engineers, as well as any specialist consultants specific to your project to work up the concept designs. If we haven't already, this is where we move from 2D to 3D, start introducing materials and creating the visuals. If required, we would submit for planning approval at the end of this stage.
Stage 4
Technical Design
This stage is about the production of information with each design discipline producing a set of detailed drawings which will enable the contractor to price against and ultimately build from. It is at this stage where final decisions regarding the specification of materials, fixtures and fittings are made. To make these decisions easy for our clients, we use a combination of virtual reality environments, photo realistic CGIs and physical material samples.

"Happily Ever After"
With the build completed, you are now free to sit back and enjoy your home.
Stage 5
Construction
After the tender process, where we obtain prices from at least four contractors, the selected contractor will begin the construction of the project. Throughout this stage we will manage the contractor, monitor site progress and keep you regularly updated throughout.
How much will it cost?
This is the question we get at the start of every project. Each project is completly bespoke and unique, additionally with so many options in terms of materials, fittings and finishes available, it is impossible to provide an exact build cost before we have a greater idea of what you are looking for and ultimately what the design will be. We can however provide ballpark figures based upon past projects. The following example prices are for a typical London terrace house;
Rear Extension - £40,000 to £50,000
Side Extension - £40,000 to £50,000
Mansard Extension - £65,000 to £90,000
Dormer Extension - £45,000 to £65,000
New Build - £2,800 to £4,000 per sqm.
All prices are a guide only and exclude VAT, fees and internal fit out. Prices vary from region to region.
